Current Energy Star specifications exclude commercial/professional products. Because classroom audio manufacturers primarily sell to school districts, they fall under the commercial/professional category and are therefore not eligible to use the Energy Star label.
What is Energy Star?
Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. In 1992 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced Energy Star as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Computers and monitors were the first labeled products.
Commercial/Professional Exclusion
The Energy Star label does not currently recognize products that are intended for commercial or professional use. Energy Star and the EPA have announced they will be expanding the scope of the Audio/Video specification to include a wider range of consumer electronics, which will include commercial/professional products. Lightspeed's Chief Engineer, Dave Jordahl, is participating in EPA's stakeholder meetings to develop the new revised standards for this product category.
What Does This Mean to Lightspeed Customers?
Although Lightspeed Classroom Audio Products are designed to meet energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and the Department of Energy, they do fall into the commercial/professional category. As a result Lightspeed products cannot bear the Energy Star logo until the specification is revised to include products intended for commercial/professional use. Until then, Lightspeed will continue to engineer its classroom audio systems to be highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
